A brief history of SISM & IFMSA

The International Federation of Medical Student’s Associations is one the biggest and oldest student association in the world. Currently it counts more than 1,2 million of medical students coming from 135 National Member Organizations in 125 different countries, and it represents he biggest association of medical students. The aims of IFMSA, through its thematic areas and its projects, is to strive for a healthier world, a better world. It collaborates with many international partners such as the United Nation, the WHO and many other organizations of global significance to achieve its goals.

But what was the primum movens that led to the creation of this reality?
In 1948 the SICC (Student International Clinical Conference) was held in England upon the initiative of the IUS (International Union of Students), which was born at the end of World War II. During that assembly some Dutch students decided to hold the next SICC, but due to a conflict, some students left the Union. Thus, the proposal for an international, nonpartisan association of medical student arouse.

An international congress was held to create this Federation, in which Denmark was in charge of seeking financial support from WHO. The latter agreed with the creation of the federation but did not make any promise at the time. Students were only solicited to work for the development of a plan about the organization with clear objectives.

The representatives of eight countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, UK and  Austria) met in Copenhagen, in May 1951, and presented the draft of the constituent act to initiate this new federation with the aim to study and promote the interest of medical students on a professional basis, to further activities in the field of student health. This is how IFMSA was born.

The IFMSA head office was originally located in Copenhagen (Denmark) in 1951. It was temporarily moved to Canada in 1962 before going back to Copenhagen in 1963. In 1970 it was moved to London (UK), in 1971 to Helsinki (Finland), then in 1978 to Vienna (Austria). Due to financial and organisational obligations, it was then moved to L’Aquila in 1978 before estabilishing itself in Amsterdam (Netherlands) in 1989. In 1999 an agreement was reached with WMA (World Medical Association), and the head office was moved to Ferney-Voltaire, near Geneva, in France, before Permanently going back to Copenhagen.

Meanwhile, our Association, SISM, was born in 1970. Today the Segretariato Italiano Studenti in Medicina is a full member of IFMSA, participating actively in the Federation’s life and, beside the activities shared in the various committees, holds about 800 bilateral Professional&Research exchange contracts with more than 100 NMOs around the world.
